Research Project
Filaments
Most Loricariinae species have filamentous extensions at the spines of the fins, especially at the upper spine of the caudal fin. The length of the filaments in several species is very impressive and can exceed the standard length of the individual specimen.
Several hypotheses exist regarding their function:
- Confusion of predators
- Sensitive organ for exploring the surrounding area
- Sexual display function
No confirmed explanation for the existence of these filamentous extensions currently exists in the scientific literature.
We are looking to collaborate with biologists and ichthyologists to research the potential function of these structures. If you are interested, please contact us for further details.
